OBEDIENCE

Obedience is something that everyone has a problem with no matter who you are. The only way you could obey all the time is if you were perfect, and guess what your not. It is definitely something that I really struggle with. It dose not matter if we do what people tell us to that is not obedience. Well that is part of it, but the main thing is our attitude when we do it.
Let’s use a classic. Your Mom asks you to take out the garbage. You do it but all the way down you car length long driveway you are mumbling ‘cause you were right in the middle of reading this great book, or you were right in the middle of trying to get away from Cross (that is his name right) in Need For Speed: Most Wanted. Well anyway you were not happy about having to take the garbage out. I think The BIBLE says somewhere to “do all with a joyful spirit” I am not sure though I could not find it.
Your attitude is not the only thing, there is also how long it takes you to respond. If I said “Hold on a sec I am right in the middle of gettin’ away from Cross,” to my Dad he would say something like “I am going to cross you if you do not take the garbage out.
Now here is the part that actually matters when you disobey anyone you are disobeying GOD. Something that is even worse then that is disobeying GOD directly if HE is telling you to go talk to that strange lookin’ being that is standing in the corner with a shotgun you best do it. I personally disobey GOD directly almost every time he tells me to do anything like that. It is not a geed thing but I do have a big problem with obedience.

O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E obedience is the very best way to show that you beveave........OK I will stop singing now.

AMEN BROTHA! Preach it!

It's good to do what you're told, but if you have a bad heart attitude about it, then it's just as bad as not doing it. Be filled with the joy of the Lord, Children! "Do all things without murmerings and disputes." (I know it's in the Bible, I just don't know where. Corinthians maybe?)

I thought you didn't have a problem with talking to people, Beth?

i don't. but i know what he is talking about. see what faith said.

ok, I have a few comments here...

God does not speak to His people directly any more. He used to in the Old Testament, but those ways have ceased. Today, we have the Scriptures that are God-breathed. We must diligently study THEM and obey THEM, and not think that God will just speak to us somehow. His perfect Word is all we have, and they are enough! We don't need any other guidance. We must act on what the scriptures say and just trust that God will give us wisdom in doing His will.

Do any of you agree or disagree?

Anonymous said...

you know i disagree emily.

Emily said...

yes, I know that bethy...

But at the conference at my church, the Confession brought this subject up, so Dr. Renihan spoke about it. He said to ask this question...How can you prove it? Give me solid proof that God actually talks to you. Are you sure it's not just your head?

The 1689 Baptist Confession of Faith says this:

"...to commit [God's will] wholly unto writing; which makes the Holy Sctiptures be most necessary, those former ways of God revealing His will unto his people being NOW CEASED." And it gives these verses:

"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things..." (Hebrews 1:1)

"That your trust may be in the Lord, I have made them known to you today, even to you. Have I not written for you thirty sayings of council and knowledge, to make you know what is right and true, that you may give a true answer to those who sent you?" (Proverbs 22:19-21)

"For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope." (Romans 15:4)

"And we have something more sure, the prophetic Word, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone's own interpretation." (2 Peter 1:19-20)

I'm sorry Beth, but what Dr. Renihan said encouraged me to say all this stuff...I know we usually "agree to disagree", but I just wanted to tell you what Scripture says about this. the Bible CLEARLY says that we need no other guidance in how to live our lives for Christ besides the scriptures, which are breathed out by God. God has not spoken directly to His people since the time of Christ. He gave us Christ so that he doesn't need to! (see Hebrews 1:1) We have all the knowledge we need right in the Scriptures. And I believe this with all my heart.

Please understand Beth sweetie...THIS IS THE WORD OF GOD! You cannot deny it.

I love you Bethy.

AMEN! EMILY!!!!!!

i love you too Beth, but i have to agree with Emily it right there in front of you

Heb 1:1 umm, trinity? God and Jesus and the Holy Spirit are one.... still God talking.

not sure what you ment by Proverbs 22:19-21,Romans 15:4, i don;t think they has any thing to do with this.

2 Peter 1:19-20, just saying that prophecy comes from God, and you should test it.

i'm sorry emy and faithy, but the Bible clearly says that the gifts are for today, and that God talks to you. see 1Corinthians chapters 12-14.

love you both!

how do you not see that has something to do with it....i am sorry but right there you saying that shoes you dont clearly see it..... and it looks to me that you are not interperting the verses right,.....

i will be praying

beth i would like too point out that Emily gave 5 verses from multible books of the bible to prove her point(with comintary), i would allso like to point out some famus ppl who all clamed to have direct revelation from "god" .A.D Mohamed the profet of islam, Benny Hinn and Hitler. Beleaving you have direct revelation God is a dangerus thing, that is why god gave us his Holy ALL SUFFICIENT Word to protect us from fals profits, we dont need any thing eles but His Word and faith in Christ(and a good church whith a Godly paster).

Wow, we got alot goin' on here this week.

OK, I wanna make sure I know exactly what y'all are sayin' before I try to throw in my two cents. Faith (& co.), are you guys saying that God doesn't even prick your heart as to the direction He wants you to go? For example when I prayed for God to tell me wheather or not I should stay out of state for a month or not. I prayed long and hard about that, and God finally told me, "Mary, sweety, stay home." I mean, I didn't hear a voice from heaven actually say it, but I knew it was God's will. He told me so. "How?" you might be asking. Well, I made the decision to stay home, but I kept praying earnestly about it. Suddenly all my worries about the matter disappeared. I was wondering what my friends there might think about me not staying with them, or what things might happen if I had stayed. I had peace about it. It has gone the opposite way too. That's how God talks to me. Do you agree with that?

And, Beth, are you saying that people can literally hear His voice talking to them? Or that He actually speaks through people using their voices?

I just wanna be clear.

Yes, I have comments, but my computer has now lost my paragraphs of typing twice, so I have to go to bed!

My only thought that I find important enough I must share tonight: please be praying before you post your comments!
John set this up for the mutual edification of the body of Christ, and as I grow older I find often times I should have kept my mouth shut, so just beware of your words my dears!

Eph 4:29
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

ok, here is what i say, i agree with what you said jane, i never actually hear Gods voice, but it is a prick in my spirit etc etc etc, i do believe that some peole have the gift of prophecy, i don't have it, some i'm not sure how it works, but yah.

anyways, i don't think we should argue about it. we will never change one another, so what exactly is the point?

Anonymous said...

ok i dont think arguwing is edifying but i do think dibaiting and exirsiying youer beleivs is, i know we have all prayed and looked at scipter becaus of this matter and hope we are all metur enuf to not be bitter.

Jane as to youer dissuasion making praying is very good and you shuold do it often but you shuold allso read the Word of God too just as much it may not tell things like wat colur you should paint youer house but it will tell you things like if you move you should move to a place were there is a good church ect. ect. I edify you to meditate in prayer as well as His Word it is directly inspird by God given to His ppl as a tool, as gideints for things just like that.

pleez forgiv my spelling.

Jane, we believe that yes prayer is good and God anwers prayer but we DO NOT believe God talks to ppl any more because now we have the word of God aka bible. He used to b4 the bible was done. But now the bible says that we have the bible and He does not need to any more

i dont consider this arguing i think it is good for use to talk about what we believe and Me and Beth already have talked about it to make sure we dont hurt each other.

Emily said...

yes, I don't think it will do any good to keep this up, but just a few final comments...

Yes, prayer is definitely something we need to do earnestly especially when we're making a major decision. However, studying the Bible is also necessary. God will not allow us to go in the wrong direction unless He knows it will be for our good and for His glory. God has given us Christian Liberty so we must act on what we think is right according to the Scriptures, and not wait and wait for some "sign" or "push" from God. God doesn't perform special revelations any longer because we have the entire COMPLETE bible, and we need nothing else besides that.

Glory be to God for giving us His totally inerrant Word for our instruction and guidance!

Oh, and Bethy, those verses from Proverbs and Romans are saying that God has given us His WORD for our instruction so that we may know what is right and true. We don't need any other special revelation from God because His word is perfect and it tells us what is right and true. How can you deny that...it's God-breathed!

thank you Faithy for agreeing with me. i love you Bethy, even though i know you're wrong on this. I think I've learned some important stuff from this discussion.

Glory be to God alone and may He be edified in our conversations.

Oh, I know how important it is to read His Word. I have more of a problem with my prayer life than reading the Bible, but that's a personal problem.

And I think it's good to discuss Biblical truths, but in part Sara's right. Constantly going back and forth about something can destroy friendships, marriages (that obviously doesn't apply to us), and even peoples' relationships with God. We just have to be careful that we don't take things to far. If we have a long-standing disagreement about something, then I think it would be wisest to just drop it. Sometimes all we can do is pray that God would guide and direct those we love. God will set us straight (whoever may be wrong).

I find it personally alarming that a blog that was intended for edification has turned into a carnal debate with people on both sides arrogantly throwing stones at one another. I would encourage all who have participated in this to search your own heart, not to see if you are right or wrong on this, but of the very attitudes that have been conveyed in some of these comments.

It further alarms me when I see John John asking if this Dr. R man was speaking through Satan. Last time I checked John noboby on God's earth has completely discerned and figured out God or the scriptures. In the vain of your arguement, how do we know that it was not Satan that promted you to lash out at this person's comment. Furthermore, I think all Christians should be willing to reason about the scriptures in humility, not in arrogance. I find it hard to believe that a young man of 15 years old could be absolutely right about everything, and especially in the scriptures. The learner has and displays a humble attitude of "If I am wrong Lord then teach me." Also, If you started this blog for edification, then you should by all means be the last person to be lashing out or insuiating an arguement. This is not the Spirit of God or the fruit of the Spirit.

One final comment. I noticed that some of these bloggers have listed by their profile their zodiac information. You all should take notice that astrology, in the sense of the zodiac, has its roots in soothsaying, witcraft, and is demonic. A wise Christian would do well to not associate himself with such foolishness.

God be with all of you,
A humble pastor.
